Family Constellations

We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view

Bob Dylan

Can two hours change your life? Can a single conversation with a loved one (or hated one) heal a lifetime of resentment? We may still have a lot of our own work to do. But why should we do it alone?

Family Constellations is psychodrama drawn from the collective unconscious, a secular seance. Its bold claim is that we can heal ourselves by healing someone who may not be present, who often may not even be alive. How is that even possible?

Family Constellations has challenged my ego. It says it’s not all about me. I may have no idea what my problems are actually stemming from. It could be something happening on the other side of the world. It could be many generations in the past.

One thing that is clear is that Family Constellations is no trick. It’s amazing how open people are to channeling others and how well it works.

I think the first lesson is that we are not really individuals to begin with. We are a system. And if you want to heal individuals, you have to heal the system. Like Steve Torma says, since our wounding is in community, our healing must be there also.

We are not just all connected; we overlap. The parts of us that don’t overlap allow us to do the work for each other without the identification and the blocks that we each have. But how can we heal something in another place or time?

It’s no coincidence that the Family Constellations process is guided by intuition. Perhaps it’s only our thoughts, our ego, that separates us, and that separation is an illusion. Maybe the choice of whether or not to do Family Constellations is like choosing whether or not to use the internet. You can’t believe everything you read online, but just because you can hit your finger with a hammer is no reason not to use one.

They say those who do not know their past are doomed to repeat it. Family Constellations tells us the past can not only be known, but changed. Perhaps we’re not separate across space or time. If you can let go of thinking you’re your own separate person and that you know how the world works, maybe then you can start to heal.

Imagine being able to change the past and, with it, the future. More and more today, it seems like we need a miracle to save us. Family Constellations may be just the thing.
