Foraging, the gathering of wild, local fruits and vegetables, is a tradition as old as the hills — and is making a comeback among a new generation of foodies.

Before farms, before grocery stores, before McDonald’s, all food came from the wild. Alan Muskat, the owner of No Taste Like Home, leads tours designed to inform people about that tradition in the woods of Western North Carolina.

“Above all, I want people to get a sense of what I call home, which is a place of safety or abundance — basically like a Garden of Eden feeling,” Muskat said. “The world actually is a friendly, supportive place, not a scary, dangerous place that’s full of poison and things that are out to get you.”
